I Can Save the World and So Can You! w/ Isabel and Friends, Garage Cuban Band Trio, HoneySmoke, Lindsay Holler, She goes He Goes, Vikki Matsis

When: Sat., Feb. 27 2016

Jonathan Gray (Jump, Little Children, Garage Cuban Band) will accompany his 11-year-old daughter Isabel on an expedition to Antarctica next month — yes, that Antarctica. Last year, Isabel attended a presentation by polar explorer and environmental advocate Robert Swan, OBE — the first person to walk both the North and South Poles. Isabel was then chosen to join Swan and a team of 100 on his next expedition, making her the youngest person to accompany the team in their 13 years. “He first decided he wanted to journey to the South Pole when he was 11 like me, and he worked hard for over a decade to make it happen,” Isabel says on her GoFundMe page. “He talked about the wildness of Antarctica and its need to be protected beyond the current treaty, which spares the continent from oil exploration and drilling until 2041. In fact, he created a non-profit called 2041 with a mission ‘to build personal leadership skills among people who choose to embrace the challenge of sustaining all forms of life – in their families, communities, organizations and the planet.’ He showed us pictures of orcas, whales, seals, and penguins — I was hooked!” Since receiving the good news, Isabel has been busy trying to raise money for the journey via everything from starting the GoFundMe page to playing her violin on King Street. Now she and Jonathan have gathered a few friends for a family-friendly benefit show on the Pour House deck this Sat. Feb. 27 from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event — I Can Save the World and So Can You! — welcomes to the stage Isabel and Friends, Garage Cuban Band Trio, HoneySmoke, Lindsay Holler, She goes He Goes, Vikki Matsis, and many more. The entry fee is donation-based, and all funds received (cash, checks, and credit cards accepted) go directly to Isabel’s expedition with Swan and the 2041 Foundation. The Grays will also hold a fundraising event on Thurs. Feb. 25 at J. Crew. You can find more info on that here. To learn more about Isabel’s mission or to donate online, go to her GoFundMe page here.
