Tired of the mundane, all-too-familiar Saturday night plans of dinner and a movie? Yeah, us too. Instead, you can catch us at the May 26 roller derby battle between the Carolina Hurticanes and our very own Lowcountry Highrollers All-Stars, the team’s last home game until the fall. Also joining the arena will be the junior league Holy City Chaos, who will fight tooth and nail against the Columbia Quad Squad’s Mini Derby team for the finish line. And, hey, it’s for a good cause too: All proceeds will go to the High School Injury Prevention Coalition, an organization that looks to prevent unsafe driving behavior among high schoolers. “I’ve never met a first-timer that didn’t have an awesome time,” says Lowcountry Highrollers member Camille Kale (otherwise known as Hurricane Camille). “It’s awesome, it’s entertaining, but it’s definitely an athletic sport. It’s a good sport to watch. It’s real. There’s nothing fake about roller derby.” Tickets are on sale online at brownpapertickets.com and at various locations throughout the Lowcountry. Remember: If you can’t play nice, play roller derby.
