Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote In the Heights his sophomore year at Wesleyan University. Over a decade and several revisions later, the musical became a Broadway hit, taking home four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score, Choreography, and Orchestrations. It was an unexpected success for the young man from Manhattan’s Washington Heights, who wrote the piece based on his own experiences growing up in a close-knit Puerto Rican family. The upbeat story is about a community on the brink of change, and it has attracted both traditional and non-traditional theater-goers with its universal themes.
