If you already know that Saturday night is going to leave you hangry and hungover the next day, then you should definitely make plans to go to the Iron Mary Bloody Mary Competition on Sunday. The Local 616 is hosting this ultimate hangover cure/Bloody Mary-making competition, where 16 of Charleston’s favorite local bartenders will participate in an Iron Chef-style competition. Some of the bartenders include Sarah Sanderson from Tattooed Moose, Cane Sanders from Union Provisions, Lauren Duke from Dudley’s, Cami Kind from The Sparrow, Eric Campbell from Blossom, Michael Moore from Rue de Jean, Lesley Carroll from Jack of Cups, and more. Contestants will have their Marys judged by local celebrities such as Linda Ketner, the Royal Tinfoil’s Lily Slay, City Paper’s ex-editor-in-chief Stephanie Barna, comedian Jennifer Buddin, The Urban Electric Co.’s Dave Dawson, and Sam Cooper, the owner of Connections Niteclub. Paul Roof will be the event’s emcee, and Joel Hamilton’s one-man-band Mechanical River will provide the jams. The proceeds benefit We Are Family, an organization dedicated to the support and leadership development of the LGTBQI youth in the Charleston area. “There will be oyster shooters, and we’ll be selling Iron Mary posters and T-shirts,” says Melissa Moore, executive director of We Are Family. The entrance fee covers all-you-can-eat oysters and a complimentary Bloody Mary.
