Island Escape

When: Sat., July 17, 7-10 p.m. 2010

If you’re in need of a vacation but your budget can only squeeze in a staycation, look no further than downtown George Street. There, you’ll find tiki torches, food, island music, and maybe even some fruity drinks with little umbrellas. Caviar & Bananas and Taashki Handbags are hosting a tropical getaway party called The Island Escape, a fundraiser for MUSC Behavioral Medicine. The idea was dreamed up by Dr. Alok Madan of MUSC Behavioral Medicine and his wife, Natasha Shamdasani Madan, the designer of Taashki Handbags. Proceeds from the event will support staff training, patient care, and research efforts. For $75, guests will enjoy Caribbean cuisine from the countries of Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Barbados, as well as an open bar with signature cocktails. Steel drum group The Sounds of Steel will provide live music as partygoers participate in a silent auction and raffle with items donated by Charleston’s restaurants and retailers. “There is a definite shortage of funding for MUSC Behavioral Medicine, and this event will really be a help,” says Katie Kern of Circa PR. If all goes well this year, the Island Escape may become an annual mini-vacay for charitable Charlestonians. —Kelly Smith
