Jail Break: Optical Delusions

When: Sat., April 26, 4 p.m. 2014

At Jailbreak, the Old City transforms into a labyrinth and multimedia showcase of Charleston’s vibrant art scene. This year’s theme of Optical Delusions will have dancers, poets, fashion designers, visual artists, comedians, and musicians. Festival goers can wander from the JB Comedy room to rooms filled with M.C. Escher-inspired drawings, and the art showcase will have interactive surprise installations that revolve around Optical Delusions. “This theme has been such a challenge and an inspiration,” says Amber Posey of Entropy Arts. “We thought about how much fun we would have playing with this idea of perceived reality and distortion of an environment. Then we thought about the fact that the environment we are working with is this perfectly creepy old jail.” But the art isn’t only in the jail, it’s on the grounds too. Local favorites like Tyler Boone and Dead 27s will be playing live music all evening long, and artisans including Low Country Studios, Bird Flower Creations, Laloma Chalkboard & Designs, and Simply Becoming Designs will be selling wares like up-cycled chalkboards and handmade clothes and jewelry. “This spring we want everyone to be well fed and a little inebriated as they wander through our museum of optical illusions. Inmates can choose from Autobanh Food Truck, Diggity Doughnuts, and the Refuelers Mobile Café,” says Posey. “It’s a creative opportunity that we share with some really progressive and cool folks around town.”
