When: Fri., June 1, 9 p.m. and Sat., June 2, 9 p.m. 2012
YouTube star. You might have already seen one of Jake Shimabukuro's virtuosic performances without knowing it. He owes much of his fame to a YouTube video of him playing George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," an astonishing feat on the four-stringed instrument that has been viewed by over 10 million people to date. Haven't seen it yet? Go look it up. Seriously, do it now.
Crowd pleaser. With his humble persona and try-anything approach to music, Shimabukuro won over the crowd in a packed Cistern Yard during his last Spoleto concert in 2009, flying through heavy-metal finger-tap solos, weepy chord progressions, jazz excursions, and, of course, a few Beatles tunes.
Stay for the Honoluau. Not to strum our own uke, but the City Paper has teamed up with Spoleto SCENE and the Savage Law Firm to put on a Hawaiian-themed after-party at the Gaillard Exhibition Hall on June 2. If you're over 21, buy a combo ticket and stroll on over for cocktails and music from local band Guilt Ridden Troubadour.
