Juneteenth Freedom Festival

When: Sat., June 19, 1 p.m. 2010

Juneteenth signifies one of the most important events in American history: June 19 is the day Major Gen. Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the slaves had been freed by President Abraham Lincoln. Because of the Civil War, the West was pretty much left out of the loop of current events, so it took a while (two and a half years) to get the news out. The Juneteenth Festival has long been celebrated in the west, but in Charleston, where slavery was more prevalent, the celebration has yet to gain serious momentum. But you can’t keep a good party down. At Hampton Park, there will be raffles, African storytellers and drummers, music from bands like Dream Merchants and New Image, face painting, art, food, educational programs, and much more. Kevin Washington, owner and designer of the HOODSG brand, will also make an appearance with his new clothing line. —Christina Janke
