Avid karaoke fanatics should be sure to attend the seventh installment of the Karaoke Smackdown, presented by What If? Productions and Threshold Repertory Theater. The event will once again be hosted by local actor Brian Porter (Thrill Me, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors) and will feature a judges’ panel that includes local comedians Jeremy McLellan and Andy Rider. Contestant counselor Dr. Gustav (Andrea McGinn) will also be on hand to help out the superstars. “The [Smackdown] is a cool way to do something together besides just plays,” says Kyle Barnette, producing artistic director at What If? “It’s also a way to reach out to people who may not be big theater fans.” In keeping with tradition, this year’s competition has a theme — movie soundtracks — and two rounds. Round one consists of 10 pre-selected contestants, each singing a prepared song from a list of 20 that they’re free to choose ahead of time. Six participants will then be eliminated by the judges panel, with some help from the audience. Round two consists of the final four contestants, who, after each ingesting a shot of Fireball, will compete in a karaoke smackdown where they’ll sing another song, this time off of a pre-selected list by the judges. And the champion will then be crowned.
