Over much of late spring and into early summer, the weekly Shemdig events have been kicking up some action on Thursday evenings at The Landing at Shem Creek (100 Church St., right next door to Red's Icehouse) with a pretty colorful variety of live music in the main ballroom (just off the creekside deck). Sponsored by Q104.5, Barrier Island Marine, Budweiser, and Firefly Vodka, the weekly events take place between 5-9 p.m.
This week's event (Thurs. June 25) features a lengthy playlist of beach/shag, soul, and oldies from popular local DJ Jim Bowers — a beach music expert if there ever was one. Next week's Shemdig boasts a big-name rock guy and a big boat giveaway contest sponsored by Barrier Island Marine. Veteran singer/songwriter Kevn Kinney (the Georgia-based Drivin' n' Cryin' frontman) headlines in support of his latest album, Pre-Approved Pre-Denied/Speakeasy: Acoustic Sketchbook & Words (SRT). Kinney's a regular performer n the Charleston area, and he always plays a mix of classic materials and new stuff.
"We kick off the holiday weekend with a bang," says propter Jordan Freeman. "Taking the stage will a popular Southern rock and folk music recording artist. In addition, Barrier Island Marine will be hosting the finale for their boat giveaway contest. Thirteen contestants will be vying for the chance to bring home a 17-foot Maverick Mirage Flats Boat from Barrier Island Marine."
There will be a $5 per person cover charge at the door. For more information visit shemdig.com.
