Kicking off fox-hunting season

Hounds Will Be Hounds

I rode out to Middleton Place on Sunday morning for what seemed to be a very proper event. I worried that I'd feel out of place, but what I found was a mildly boozy affair centered around dogs and horses — who wouldn't love it? The Blessing of the Hounds at Middleton kicked off the mounted fox-hunting season here in the Lowcountry. And there was not a speck of camouflage in sight. Instead, after the blessing, families packed into SUVs and trucks to hit the muddy roads surrounding the plantation to stand in the cold rain, sharing picnics, drinks, and family traditions. The mounted riders, in full regalia, galloped through the woods with the excited hounds barking at their heels. Drinking from silver chalices and heeding the trumpeting of horns, I was just waiting for Prince Caspian to emerge from the woods to announce the arrival of Aslan and join us for brunch back at Middleton Place. —Svetlana Minx
