When: Fri., June 10, 9:30-11 p.m. 2011
A spicy gumbo of jazz, blues, and Latin flavors. Piccolo Spoleto's jazz program presents a new nighttime music series at a new venue, featuring sets by the jazz-blues combo Blue Mudd, the swingin' Cobblestone Quartet, the loungy Sean Daniels Trio, the Brazilian-tinged Waters of March, and longtime Charleston favorite the Lonnie Hamilton Quartet.
Get down with some of Charleston's finest. The roster at Saffron offers a variety of genres and a handful of local celebrities. Singer/guitarist Vic Varner will get soulful with Blue Mudd during the first week before digging deep into a set of traditional Brazilian sambas and bossa novas during the second week with Waters of March. Guitarist David Archer's Cobblestone Quartet boasts longtime Charleston jazz man saxophonist George Kenny in the front line. Anyone who remembers alto sax player Lonnie Hamilton's popular band the Diplomats knows the guy can wail and groove.
Swingers. While Spoleto Festival USA's Wells Fargo Jazz Series emphasizes world music and international talent, these events offer a more affordable, laid-back, traditionally jazzy alternative in an award-winning café setting.
