When: Fri., April 1, 5-8:30 p.m. 2016
The work of artist Hampton R. Olfus addresses the subject of layers both physically — in the construction of his mixed-media pieces — and metaphorically, in the multifaceted meaning he attributes to them. Olfus’ exhibit, Layers: A Parallel Complex Visual Entropy, opens with a reception this Friday at West Ashley’s newest art space, Fabulon. Olfus will lead guests in creating a mixed-media piece in which every guest has a hand in its production. Fabulon gallery owner Susan Irish says this of Olfus: “He is not just an artist but a master of the elements he works in, which include paint, found objects, and pen and ink, meticulously layering lines with a depth you can’t understand until you really study the piece.” Olfus and Irish are both interested in fostering unity in the local arts community. For Irish that means bringing in every level of artist to her gallery to give them an entry into the professional world, while Olfus hopes to create a camaraderie among the existing artists in West Ashley.
