Listen To Your Mother

When: Sun., May 3, 2 p.m. 2015

Angie Mizzell and her cast of 12 women (and one man) want to share stories of motherhood with you — stories about mothering and being mothered. Listen to Your Mother started in 2010 in Madison, Wisc., when Ann Imig wanted a live show in which she and other women could showcase personal essays about motherhood. With stories that range from lighthearted — Mizzell assures us that one story is laugh-out-loud funny — to sad, to poignant, Charleston’s LTYM show has tales that run the gamut. Reggie Davis, the show’s sole male voice, will speak about his mother’s alcoholism and his unconditional love for her. Kris and Betsy Harper, a mother-daughter duo, will take turns reading parts of their life stories. Charleston held its first LTYM show last year and it quickly sold out, forcing the production to add a night at Footlight Theatre. This year the stage is set at Charleston Music Hall, and Mizzell hopes that 300-400 people will come out to hear the crews’ stories. Mizzell says that cast members and their stories are chosen based both on the stories themselves, and the way each one works with the next, so that the flow of stories tells a much bigger picture of what motherhood is like. “It’s so much more than a Mother’s Day card,” says Mizzell. “It’s about this role in all of our lives and how it impacts us.”
