Behold, people of the Stone Age, the media tool of the century is here. At 9 a.m. Mac finally unleashed its latest tool for browsing, reading, working, and all of the above: the iPad.
As strange as the name sounds, there’s high expectations for the iPad. As 9 o’clock drew closer, a line of about 60 people were wrapped around the corner of Charleston’s King Street Apple Store. Employees handed out refreshments and pastries from Starbucks.
At 8:40 a.m., the curtain came down from within the store to reveal the coveted device and how it worked. A major tease, if you ask us. Harrison Touby was first in line to get his hands on the new Mac product. He had been standing in line since 4:30 a.m.
“My friends and I run a web design company,” said Touby, “and the iPad is going to help us better show our customers what we can do live rather than just showing them pictures. Plus, I’ll be able to use Power Point. For me, it’s pretty much work-on-the-go.”
Seth Rubenstein, who works at local Charleston book publisher Book Advantage Media Group, had been waiting since 6 a.m. “We want to utilize the iPad’s capabilities to make our books available as e-books,” said Rubenstein.
“It’ll just be better for me to watch movies, play games, and read books,” said 13-year-old Jay Bell, “Especially when I’m travelling. I just don’t want to watch a movie or read a comic book on a tiny screen.”
