The South Carolina Arts Commission Board recently announced the winners of the 2010 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Awards for the Arts, the highest honor the state presents in the arts. Four of the eight people recognized are from the Lowcountry. Julian Wiles, the founder and artistic producing director of Charleston Stage, received the Individual Artist Award. Daniel Island-based Jonathan Green, famous for his fanciful paintings, won the Lifetime Achievement Award, as did South of Broad author Pat Conroy, who is based on Fripp Island. Summerville’s Larry Barnfield received the Arts in Education Award for his work with the fine arts in Dorchester District II schools. For more information, see southcarolinaarts.com.
