Organized by members of the Lowcountry Blues Club, the Lowcountry Blues Challenge is a month-long series of shows leading up to a grand finale on Sat. Sept. 19 at Rendezvous Bar and Grille (7832 Rivers Ave.). The winner of the Challenge will be sent to Memphis in February to represent Charleston and compete in the 2009 International Blues Challenge, presented by The Blues Foundation.

Billed as the "world's largest gathering of blues bands," the events in Memphis take place Feb. 4-7 with over 160 blues acts from around the world performing at the New Daisy Theater, the Tennessee Ballroom, the Orpheum Theater, and various Beale Street club venues.

"If you are a musician with a band leaning towards the blues or a blues fan, we need your help," says organizer Tommy Thunderfoot, a local singer and guitarist. "This is one of the best opportunities to be nationally recognized in the blues arena."

On Sat. Aug. 15, the Challenge hosts the Hwy. 17 Blues Band, The Fabulous Porch Dogs, Slanguage, and Circa 56 at the Southern Comfort Bar & Grill (1761 N. Main St., Summerville) at 7 p.m. The fourth installment of the competition takes place at A Dough Re Mi (1220 Ben Sawyer Blvd.) with Steel Petals, Memphis Rich, Li'l Jimmy & The Dyrti Boyz, and TWS & Friends.
