Sponsored by Coastal Community Foundation (CCF), Lowcountry Giving Day (LGD) is an online fundraising effort designed to support local nonprofits. Last year, between direct donations and pledged incentive funds (i.e. a donor matches another person’s donation to a specific nonprofit), LGD raised about four million dollars for nonprofits in the tri-county area. You heard that right — four million. In addition to online donations, people can head out to various events around town to support their favorite causes. The LGD Theatre-A-Thon held by the Flowertown Players on Main St. Summerville will feature a day of free theatre events from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Head out to The Alley for a joint LGD and Cinco de Mayo party where 10 percent of all sales during the day will go to Ronald McDonald House and several other charities. Check out Coastal Community Foundation’s blog for a full list of events on May 5. With 179 participating nonprofits, this year’s day of giving spans the tri-county area and beyond, including eight counties outside of Charleston. LGD’s Monica Tanouye says that last year — the online funding event’s first year — was such a success simply because so many people donated. “It really was a grassroots fundraising event, by normal people,” she says. She’s not kidding — 75 percent of last year’s gifts were less than $100. Head to lowcountrygivingday.org on May 5 and donate to a cause of your choice. The minimum donation is $25.
