August is a weird month. The kids are back in school, summer is winding down, and it’s easy to find yourself in a between-season funk. But don’t get stuck in that rut just yet. We’ve got something to help you jazz it up: the Lowcountry Jazz Festival. Now in its sixth year, the festival kicks off Thursday night with Grammy Award-winner Norman Brown and multi-faceted singer/songwriter Bobby Caldwell. Friday hosts a range of performers from the R&B-influenced Brian Culbertson to the smooth stylings of Najee, jazz keyboardist Oli Silk to sax-man Elan Trotman. Saturday and Sunday feature jazz fusionist Peter White, Top 40-inspired Euge Groove, keyboardist Brian Simpson, trumpeter Joey Sommerville, and more. But it’s not all jazz. On Saturday morning, the fest will hold a summit on health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol. The event supports Closing the Gap in Healthcare Inc., an organization dedicated to providing health information for the under-served. In this case, jazz music will not only benefit your soul, but others as well
