The last pair of roller skates we strapped on was a set of one-size-fits-all Fisher Price wheels. And although it sounds like this was decades ago, it was just last summer. Whizzing around the garage reminded us why we loved skating so much as a kid. Throw in some body checks and roller skating is the perfect Sunday activity — just ask the members of the Holy City Heartbreakers and the Ashley Riverdolls. The two roller derby teams go head to head in the second bout of the hometeam season. The Lowcountry Highrollers play year-round, but in the fall they break up into three teams. “This is the time that the audiences love. We wear the fishnets and the skirts — we love it too,” says Heartbreaker co-captain Katalyst. “There’s a lot of smack talk. It’s not as serious as when we play teams from other cities [with the Highrollers], but we’re still out to win it.” And if you’ve attended any bouts in the past, don’t expect the same blowouts from before. They’ve redrafted the teams to make things more competitive. Food trucks will be on site, and PBR and a Holy City brew will be available for purchase.
