Luau Benefit Party

When: Wed., Aug. 11, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. 2010

There’s nothing like partying for a good cause, and Mad River’s Luau Benefit Party will even allow you to make use of that hideous Hawaiian shirt that everyone’s got buried somewhere in their closet. The Market Street restaurant will host the luau to raise money for GreaterGood.org, which is involved in a variety of philanthropic efforts around the world; this specific fundraiser is targeting Gulf Coast relief efforts. Greatergood.org has donated heavily along the Gulf Coast since the oil spill, especially to animal shelters and marine life recovery efforts. The entire restaurant, including the fancy new outdoor bar and patio, will be decked out and open for the luau, and they’re providing luau-themed grub like pineapple ham, coconut shrimp, and orange chicken kabobs. Guests can also look forward to a limbo contest. And who knows? After a few drinks, you might even feel like dusting off those hula moves you learned on your last vacation. Tunes will be provided by Dub Island and The Dubplates, the local band known for their fusion of traditional Caribbean tunes with a modern/urban influence. —Cameron Jones

Price: $20/advance, $25/dor
