Comedy, Fall Arts Picks

Maria Bamford

When: Wed., Sept. 20, 8 p.m. 2017

You may recongize Maria Bamford from her role as DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix's rebooted Arrested Development or from her Netflix original, Lady Dynamite, or from her latest Netflix one-hour comedy special, Old Baby. The comedienne is known for her damn funny, often dark, always quirky comedy routines that venture into the oft-overlooked terrorities of depression, anxiety, and even suicide. She makes "no laughing matter" a relatable laughing matter, even when she devolves into facial expressions and grunting noises. Her Lady Dynamite series covers topics ranging from "hiring a loaf coach to help her master the art of doing nothing" to "bringing on a savvy young adviser to help her conquer her fear of children before a charity benefit." Jackie Kashian, also an industry vet with major chops, has been hosting The Dork Forest podcast for more than a decade. Kashian just released a new comedy album I am Not the Hero of this Story, where she broaches new topics because, she says, after the election, "I don't do political material, but I do now, I guess, 'cause I'm human."
