Matt Pond PA w/ Bobby Long, Holopaw

When: Fri., May 21 2010

It’s been a few years since Matt Pond PA released an album. But on his most-recent The Dark Leaves, it’s easy to see not much has changed. Pond’s still making the upbeat brand of indie-pop he did on previous albums; now he’s just doing it better. The Philly-based band spent that time off tweaking and fine tuning to create an album that’s easy on the ears, but equally as enjoyable on subsequent listens. The Dark Leaves goes from “Starting,” a swinging, knee-slapping opener, to the breezy alt-country “Brooklyn Fawn” without feeling forced. And with Pond’s reverby vocals and wistful lyrics, at times, it feels like floating down a river. It suits him; Pond’s not here to push boundaries or shock you. He just makes meaningful music that’ll stick around and keep you warm during a night drive or a summer rain. British folk-pop singer/songwriter Bobby Long opens in support of his new disc, Dirty Pond Songs. —Brian Sewell
