McCrady’s Charleston Pops Series: Radio Days

When: Sat., Jan. 17, 8 p.m. 2009

Back before the days of the internet and TV, folks gathered around a big ol’ noise-emitting box called a radio for entertainment. Out of that box came a magical stream of stories, music, and delightful advertisements. And while modern audiences might not be so easily entertained (or imaginative), they certainly don’t hesitate to flock to the live version of the old-timey shows. Five by Design is a Minneapolis-based group that tours the country bringing the songs and skits of the early 1940s to your local auditorium. They’re teaming up with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for the next installment of the McCrady’s Charleston Pops series. Step into a time capsule of American life in wartime (well, a different wartime), as the quintet sings big band classics from Glenn Miller, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and more. They’ll also perform classic skits — think the Lone Ranger and Superman. If you eat at McCrady’s before the concert, you can take advantage of their courtesy Black Cab service to and from the Gaillard. Just let them know when you make reservations. —Erica Jackson
