California-based songwriter and guitarist Michael Franti and his band Spearhead are heading back to Charleston next month. They opened for John Mayer at the North Charleston Coliseum in early February.

The last time Franti played the Music Farm (Feb. 2008), he worked up the arrangement to a song called "The Sound of Sunshine" during the soundcheck. It became the title track of his forthcoming studio album — a follow-up to All Rebel Rockers.

Franti's current ensemble of musicians includes vocalist Cherine Anderson, bassist Carl Young, guitarist Dave Shul, drummer Manas Itiene, and keyboardist Raliegh J. Neal. They work from a powerful blend of multicultural musical influences, hot chops, and collective positivity. Michael Franti & Spearhead play the Music Farm on Tues. May 25. Tickets are available for $25.
