Charleston’s been in the middle of a funny streak lately — more specifically, the Charleston Music Hall. It began with Aziz Ansari’s two-night engagement, and it continues with Mike Birbiglia gracing us with his crazy, storytelling presence. Birbiglia’s known for his hilariously dysfunctional over shares, an aspect of his comedic delivery that’ll surely be present in his latest show, Thank God for Jokes. And Birbiglia has quite the repertoire of amusing memories to choose from, including his battles with rapid eye movement behavior disorder that causes his eyes to act up mid-slumber. “He reached out to us in late October, and we were very excited at the chance to help bring this show to Charleston,” says Brandy Sullivan founder of Theatre 99, which is co-presenting the show. “This show is for anyone who likes to laugh.” And Birbiglia is a busy man. He’s squeezing his Chucktown visit between appearances in Judd Apatow movies and his regular contributions to NPR’s This American Life.
