One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das

When: Sat., June 29, 7 p.m. 2013

From potential rock star to drug addict to world-renowned spiritual teacher, Jeffrey Kagel’s life has covered just about all of the bases. One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das tells the story of Kagel’s decision to walk away from the '70s American dream of rock stardom. Kagel sold his possessions and moved from a life of comfort in the suburbs of Long Island to the foothills of the Himalayas, transforming his life into a quest for happiness. Directed by Jeremy Frindel and produced by Mike Harrop, One Track Heart follows Kagel’s journey to India and back, detailing his battle with depression and drug abuse after the death of Neem Karoli Baba, his guru. Kagel emerges at the end as Krishna Das, a spiritual teacher and Grammy-nominated chant master whose chanting method is similar to Jivamukti Yoga’s method. Jeffrey Cohen of Jivamukti Yoga explains, “We are doing the same things in different ways and share the same traditions.” Cast members of the documentary include Ram Dass, Sharon Salzberg, Daniel Goleman, and Rick Rubin. The film features a musical score by J Mascis and Devadas. Seating will be on the floor so they encourage you to bring snacks and a pillow.
