Palmetto JoyRide

When: Wed., Sept. 7, 8:30 a.m. 2011

If there was ever a day that you should ride your bicycle, it’s next Wednesday. Because we’ve got something to prove, Charleston. Mia Birk, a Portland-based bicycle transportation expert and author of Joyride: Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet, will be doing a tour of the state next week, and she’s stopping here first. She’ll spend her day exploring the Holy City and its suburbs, making an appearance at a luncheon with civic leaders, and doing a joyride on the Ravenel Bridge bicycle-pedestrian path. That evening, the public is invited to a lecture by Birk at the College of Charleston Beatty Center on Liberty Street at 5:30 p.m. Afterward, she’ll be at the Real Estate Studio (214 King St.) signing copies of her book. The Palmetto Conservation Foundation (PCF) and the Palmetto Cycling Coalition are hosting the events. “Birk, who has decades of experience in transforming Portland into one amazing bicycle city, will be sharing her insights on how to transform the transportation, health, economic, and environmental future of Charleston and South Carolina,” says Natalie Cappuccio Britt, executive director of PCF. “Come get inspired and join friends and colleagues as we blaze the way to a brighter future.”
