Paperdoll: The Search for the Perfect Man

When: Aug. 13-31, 5:30-8:30 p.m. 2010

There is a perfect man out there for me. His name is Aubrey Graham, but you might know him better as Drake. We’re meant to be together. It’s destiny. But local artist Karen Silvestro doesn’t really believe in the concept of perfect partners. She thinks everyone has different layers, and that relationships grow and, if given time, will work out. “Even if you did start out with someone that you thought was perfect, that could change, and someone that has imperfections, those can be the great things, or the things that you fell in love with that were your favorite things drive you crazy now,” she says. Silvestro is using her Paperdoll show, which was curated by Charleston Art Magazine’s Olivia Pool, to explore the drama of relationships, how their dynamics can change throughout life, from youthful dating to divorce. She’ll explore “the lies we tell ourselves and the truths they become. She adds, “Trying to keep a relationship, trying to keep everything going, we’ll start lying to ourselves and then it eventually almost self-prophesizes.” Silvestro hopes her work will get the audience talking, and she’s even made paperdoll books (available for purchase) specially for the opening at Robert Lange Studios. —Susan Cohen
