Back in November, we ran a cover story on the struggles of Patriots Point to distinguish itself as a tourist destination, with writer Stratton Lawrence pointing out that most visitors to the site were out-of-towners. "From the flight simulator ride to walking the length of a submarine’s interior, Patriots Point’s value as an attraction is unique," he wrote.
If you’ve ever needed an excuse to stop by this Mt. Pleasant attraction, admission is free this weekend. As part of the Centennial Anniversary of Naval Aviation, there will be free tours of the USS Yorktown, and you can also check out the Medal of Honor Museum and the Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp.
As Lawrence said, "After all, where else can you sit in the cockpit of an F9F Cougar and imagine you’re on a mission in the Korean War? ... If you’re a local who has never been onboard the Fighting Lady, consider a trip. It’s well worth it."
