Surfing the Runway debuted the latest local fashions to a packed crowd at Blu on Sunday night. The event, which included a pre-show silent auction, benefited Surfers Healing, a surfing camp for kids with autism.

Coral Swimwear kicked things off with bright bikinis that we wouldn’t be surprised to see on Charleston beaches this summer. Designer Liz Sullivan Chirles chose a lineup of athletic models, making the made-to-order suits seem even more approachable. Emily Bargeron’s Mamie Ruth Designs collection featured structured pieces in shades of blue and purple with pops of green. Of particular note was a long shoulderless and semi-backless dress with a single strip of fabric connecting the neckline to the waist. The dress is sexy from behind but remains slightly conservative with a high neckline in the front and long, flowing skirt.

Krista Beth Huff’s collection included edgy, over-the-top designs worn by leggy models with faces framed by stenciled leaves. Huff’s predilection for tulle means her designs are better for looking at than wearing, but they’re beautiful nonetheless. MEW’s Megan Waldrep’s line had a retro flair with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. Her lavender one-piece made of soft jersey material featured wide legs and an open back. The show ended with a borderline bohemian collection from Ashley Reid of Clewis Reid. Soothing brown, coral, and seafoam green colors dominated her outfits, which included wide-leg shorts and soft, feminine dresses.

The models transitioned from the runway to the after-party, where the designs were put to the test as fashionistas got a chance to see the outfits up close. The sounds of the party carried out onto the beach, and the cocktails flowed until late into the night.
