When: May 22-June 5, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. 2009
Part of the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibitions. Coordinated by the Charleston Artist Guild and sponsored by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, this exhibition showcases works of South Carolina artists.
WHAT IS IT? A yearly Piccolo staple, the Juried Art Exhibition is open to submissions from all South Carolina artists. The only caveat is that the work be two-dimensional, but that still leaves room for collage, fiber art, and other mixed-media amid the drawing, painting, and photography. Many of the works selected for display will be for sale as well. This year’s jurors are Leo Twiggs, a renowned batik artist, and Stacy Pearsall, the new director and owner of the Charleston Center for Photography.
WHY SEE IT? In addition to being a yearly tradition, this exhibition is a good chance to check out a range of work from this region and simultaneously reflect upon where it fits into contemporary art in a national context. It’s common to notice a number of names that don’t routinely pop up in local art shows, which can be a welcome change. And, of course, it’s fun to speculate about which works will win the prizes.
WHO SHOULD GO? Artists curious about what their local (and sometimes less-known) peers are up to. Supporters of local and regional art, particularly those interested in growing their own art collections. (Morrow Dowdle)
