Piece on Earth: Kiln Opening and Exhibition

When: Thu., Dec. 1, 5:30-9 p.m. 2011

The artists at Cone 10 Studios are getting fired up for their Piece on Earth event. The studio will load their gas kiln with clay pieces made by 25 of their resident artists this week and won’t open it until the day of the event. Guests can browse the freshly fired items while they’re still hot, which Betsey Carter, co-owner of the studio and resident artist, says is always exciting. “It’s amazing to see a kiln opening because of the transformation that takes place,” she says. “The process starves the kiln of oxygen, so that’s how you get all the colors and the vibrancy to come out of the pieces.” They’ll have locally made items like pottery books, tools, purses, and organic bath products by Earth Maiden for sale for those who want to get a jump start on their holiday shopping. They’ll also serve light refreshments, and several different artists’ work will be on display throughout the gallery.
