Hours: Lunch, Dinner (Daily)
Big, sloppy, house-ground burgers draw the crowds to Poe’s on Sullivan’s Island. By day, it’s a bustling beach lunch spot, by night a raucous bar and grill. The walls are hung with Edgar Allan Poe memorabilia, and all the burgers are named after his tales. The Gold Bug has a mundane slice of cheese, while the fearsome Tell-Tale Heart is topped with fried egg, bacon, and cheddar. For my money, though, the Hop Frog is the real masterpiece, especially when combined with a side of thin, crispy hand-cut fries and a local draft beer. Poe’s fish tacos are rumored to be pretty good, too. —Robert Moss (Dish, Winter 2019)
