In the summer of 2010, a group set out for rural Arkansas in search of their green thumbs. The Garden Summer follows them as they get to know each other, the art of gardening, and the joy of sustainable living.
The social experiment was begun by Hailey Wist, who traveled to the remote area that spring to till the soil before returning to grad school. The group planted the garden in May and came back five weeks later when they were ready to get to work. For part of the summer, the group ate only the things they harvested or food they sourced from nearby farms. When they had a surplus, they hosted farmers markets and field feasts.
Now that they’ve proven to themselves that sustainable life is possible — at least during the summer — they’re ready to show the rest of us how it’s done.
