It's not really a dance performance. Well, it's not only a dance performance. Musicians have joined the Charleston Ballet Theatre under Johns Island's historic Angel Oak in the past, but this year the ballet company will be accompanying North Carolina's folksy singer/songwriter Christine Kane.

"It's sort of a multi-disciplinary program as opposed to just dance," says CBT executive director Jill Eathorne Bahr.

The performance is a Piccolo Spoleto tradition that goes back years, while the Angel Oak is a majestic tree that goes back centuries. The two together have, in the past, shined in the evening performances as dancers perform under its sweeping, outstretched limbs.

The 35-minute dance is all new and will be added to the company's repertoire, but it's not going to be a traditional ballet performance.

"We try to do something not as straightforward as ballet," says Bahr. "It's going to be casual, contemporary."

The relaxed mood of the performance stretches out to the audience, who can sit in the chairs or spread out a blanket and bring a picnic. For those with a little more change in your pocket than grub in your picnic basket, Cru Catering will be offering gourmet boxed meals to enjoy during the performance.
