Quentin Baxter and Friends

When: Tue., Sept. 13 2011

Drummer Quentin Baxter, one of Charleston’s top jazz timekeepers and bandleaders, brings his Latin-tinged combo to West Ashley’s Voodoo Tiki Bar and Lounge on Tues. Sept. 13 as part of the venue’s long-awaited “unveiling” of its newly renovated lounge area. Proprietors Jen and Mike Kulick refurbished the Avondale club over the last few months. “We decided it’s time for a little TLC for the old Voodoo,” Jen said this summer. “The lounge makeover offers cushy new seats for you to rest your booties on and sip some delicious cocktails.” Baxter and his combo — members of Gradual Lean and a rotation of local and visiting players — deliver a cool and funky mix of instrumental improv. They often season their jazzy gumbo with Latin rhythms and elements of bebop, swing, and prog-rock.
