Charleston’s biggest indie record shop Monster Music & Movies (946 Orleans Road) hosts the fourth annual Record Store Day on Saturday, just as hundreds of independent record stores across the country celebrate this occasion. These shops maintain complete control over their stock, store policies, promotions, and in-store gigs. The idea for Record Store Day was conceived as a way to acknowledge the culture surrounding independently owned record stores. Monster will open its doors at 10 a.m. for a storewide and sidewalk sale. Thousands of albums will be available on CD and vinyl. “We used the [recent] Record Expo as a springboard into Record Store Day,” says owner/manager Galen Hudson. “Interest in vinyl is huge, and people are willing to travel for it.” Live music will begin at 12 p.m. Bands include Leslie, the Blue Dogs, Mac Leaphart, Ryan Bonner and the Dearly Beloved, the 33’s, Go for Launch, Brother, HeyRocco!, and Company. Food and kid’s games will be offered.
