If you love reggae as much as you love helping out others, check out Reggae on the Creek, sponsored by the Tanzanian Education Foundation (TEF). The event will be a day of sick beats on the water, with a raffle which includes some cool stuff like a Red Stripe bike, and Caribbean food and drink specials. DJ Trail Mix is kicking off the event, followed by The Dubplates Reggae Riddim Band. All proceeds from the entry fee will go directly toward TEF, a Charleston-based organization founded by Chucktown natives Erica Oblinger and Nicole Miller. Oblinger says that TEF is looking to add an additional 10 scholarships to their program this year. She also explained that students in Tanzania are expected to pass an exam in eighth grade which is given in English and without scholarships like these, students will fail these exams and will fail to escape poverty-like conditions. Education is not all that TEF focuses on, however. They also emphasize the health and well-being of their students. Last year’s goal was to get all their students to the dentist, which they accomplished. This year’s goal is to get all their students proper medical care.
