Summerville’s Flowertown Players are known for presenting community-theater crowd-pleasers like murder mysteries and dramas. But this October they’re shaking things up with Return to the Forbidden Planet, a sci-fi musical based loosely on Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
Just in time for Halloween, the retro show follows a space crew on a routine flight under the command of Captain Tempest. Their spaceship is drawn to the planet D’Illyria, where a mad scientist and his hot daughter are stranded.
The soundtrack includes hit songs from the ’50s and ’60s like “Wipe Out” and “Great Balls of Fire.” Audience members are encouraged to take a cue from the cast’s outrageous costumes and dress up, but leave the roller skates at home or you’ll have a tough time maneuvering the theater’s stairs. —Erica Jackson
