Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder

When: Tue., Nov. 2 2010

Of the acts visiting this year’s Coastal Carolina Fair, there is a standout in accreditation and recognition: Grammy winner Ricky Skaggs, a bluegrass purist and “elder statesman” of the genre. Following up his very personal solo effort, Songs My Dad Loved, Skaggs and his band, Kentucky Thunder, joined forces once again to record their latest album, Mosaic. When Skaggs returns to the Charleston area, after a year and some change away, he’ll bring Kentucky Thunder to the Fairgrounds. Even with Skaggs’ successful journey from Kentucky born singer and stringer to official bluegrass ambassador, there is no evidence that he has strayed from the roots that have brought him to his celebrated status. He credits God for granting him the talent he possesses and his father for allowing him to pursue the gift, or not. In an interview last fall Skagg says of his talent, “I could do something with it if I wanted to, or I could just walk away from it.” Thank heavens Skaggs chose to go for it. He and the guys of Kentucky Thunder — fiddler Andy Leftwich, guitarist Cody Kilby, bassist Mark Fain, singer/guitarist Paul Brewster, and banjo player Jim Mills — perform at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lakefront Stage mini-amphitheater. —Dustin J.
