Rory Scovel

When: Fri., July 31, 10 p.m. 2009

Greenville native Rory Scovel knew he’d hit the big time when he performed at the Charleston Comedy Festival last year. OK, it may have been a bit earlier, like when he performed on Comedy Central for the first time. We could argue for hours over which is a greater honor for a young comedian, but the point is, Scovel is one funny dude. During an appearance on Live in Gotham, he talked about how to recognize “the one” (road head may or may not be involved), the gayness of yoga, and getting caught masturbating to Basic Instinct by his dad. Awkward, a little shocking, hilarious stuff. When we checked out his Comedy Fest show back in January, reviewer Hadley Lyman said, “What stood out was Scovel’s strong ability to improvise, and that, combined with some solid original material, made all the difference.” And we’re not the only ones heaping praise on Scovel. Back in 2006 when he was a finalist at the Seattle Comedy Competition, The Stranger gushed, “Every night he stepped onstage his set was remarkably different, thanks to Scovel’s near-genius improvisational skill.” Opening up for Scovel are Scott Moran and Joel Atwill. —Erica Jackson
