Sandcastles have always been cool. Why is it that at a certain point, we trade sandcastles and mermaids for lounge chairs and inspirational novels? Beach activities don't have to get more boring with age. Get inspired by your inner 8-year-old at this year's Sand Sculpting Competition on Isle of Palms, where you'll have the chance to win prizes for your sand smarts. There are separate competitions for adults, teenagers, and children.
The sidelines are cool too. If you're not feeling competitive, it's still worth seeing what other sculptors are building. In past years, they've built a piano-playing octopus and the Mona Lisa. It's even more impressive than it sounds. And what's better than soaking up some rays while you soak in the beach culture?
Tools of the trade. The secret to sand sculpting? Water and lots of it. Bring plenty of buckets, because you'll want to keep your sand nice and wet if you want to sculpt something cool. Other useful tools include buckets, spoons, sticks or dowels, spray bottles, rakes, paint brushes, straws, and melon ballers.
