Brock is great

We didn't need no stinking TV show to tell us that Sean Brock is America's next great chef, but it was gratifying to watch him win the Food Network challenge on Sunday night. Brock took on three other chefs and won the $10,000 grand prize and the title of "Next Great Chef." If we had to guess, we'd bet he's already spent that money on heirloom pigs and seeds! —Stephanie Barna

Savor sushi and tacos next door

Rhett Thomas made his name doing catering with a sushi bar on wheels and developed a devoted following for his sweet and spicy rolls. Then, he eventually started working out of Savory Market on Maybank Highway once a week. The gals at Savory Market were looking for a change so they teamed up with Rhett permanently. Savory Market officially reopened as Savory Sushi and Catering presented by Sushi by Rhett on Oct. 3. They'll be serving Asian tapas, salads and fresh sushi for $7-12 a roll. You can still enjoy Savory Market's homemade dips and casseroles, available by order only. In other Terrace Plaza news, Zia Taqueria, the casual dining Mexican restaurant, opened the same day, right on schedule. Stop by if you want a quick taco and a cold margarita. —Alison Sher

Fused

There is now another place to add to the list of King Street's trendy one-named restaurants. Fused opened in the place of Little Thai Too on Sept. 26. The spot has gotten a complete renovation. Torch-esque red and black murals adorn the walls and a new bar has been set up. The giant Buddha-head water fixture has stayed. Little Thai Too chef, Eddy Phooprasert still mans the kitchen, but the restaurant now serves a revamped menu filled with eclectic Asian fusion dishes and tapas 'till midnight. —Alison Sher

Casting call

Are you the next food network star? Food Network hosts an open casting call for their fifth season of the The Next Food Network Star at the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Charleston (24 N. Market St.) on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Contestants can be professionally or self taught, but must have flavor in their personality as well as their food. Take some time to practice your teaching skills. The winner gets his or her own six-episode cooking show. —Alison Sher
