When: Thu., Aug. 21, 5 p.m. and Fri., Aug. 22, 5 p.m. 2014
With summer coming to a close, for many people that can only mean one thing — football season. Charleston’s Sertoma Football Classic brings together rival high school football teams to play for a good cause. For 44 years, the Sertoma Club’s motto has been “kids helping kids,” and that they do. The Classic has been able to return over $3,500,000 to local community charities. This year, proceeds benefit Windwood Family Services, Eagle Harbor Boys Ranch, Trinitas Foundation, participating high schools, and other local charities. The national anthem singers were selected from a contest on Facebook, so every part of the Classic is student dominated. Thursday night will feature six match-ups and Friday will have seven, with the Classic closing with the notoriously competitive Wando vs. Bishop England game. Other games include Porter Gaud vs. Lincoln, Goose Creek vs. West Ashley, and Academic Magnet vs. Stall. Chick-fil-A, Home Team BBQ, and regular Citadel concession vendors will have food and drinks available for purchase.
