Snowboard Rail Jam and Oyster Roast

When: Sat., Feb. 4 2012

For Charleston native Chad Sumner it’s all about keeping it local. So, instead of trekking to the mountains for a snowboarding trip, he decided to bring the snow to the Holy City. Holy City Events — Sumner’s party-planning and promotional company — will host their first-ever event, the Rail Roast Jam, at the Brick House Kitchen. Snow will be hauled in from the Ice Palace in North Charleston, and snowboarders and skiers alike will show off their talents on a ramp and rail constructed by local father/son carpenter duo Steve and Casey Myers. There will be three different groups competing in the Rail Jam contest: the Amateur Group, ages 16-20; the College of Charleston Group, open to current students and alumni; and the Pro Group, ages 21 and up. There will be prizes for all contestants and a $300 cash prize for best trick. Don’t forget your shucking knife, because oysters will be roasting all day, and there will be live music courtesy of the 3 Dudes, DJ LT, Rawberry Jam, and Long Miles during breaks in the Rail Jam action. “My whole goal with my company is to help support local businesses and companies,” says Sumner, who hopes to make the Rail Jam an annual event. Portions of the $5 entry fee will be donated to the MUSC Children’s Hospital. About 20 riders have already signed up, but registration is still open, and anyone interested can do so by contacting Sumner at
