South Carolina History Series: First Steps toward Civil Rights Equality in Charleston, 1866-

When: Tue., Feb. 9, 11:15 a.m. 2016

The bold Federal laws enacted after the Civil War to extend full civil rights to all in South Carolina largely failed, and segregation was the status quo in the Palmetto State by 1890. Despite this fact, there were a handful of local Civil Rights triumphs in the early years of Reconstruction that deserve to be remembered. Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for the stories of a few forgotten Charlestonians who tested the waters during the early days of the struggle for Civil Rights.
