When: Wed., June 6, 6 p.m. 2012
Just like old times. Yuriy Bekker, David Chernyavsky, and Philip Von Malzan have a long history of making music together: They met while playing together in the Spoleto Festival Orchestra more than a decade ago. And now they're rejoining forces for an intimate concert at City Gallery, with a little help from violist Simon Ertz.
Yuriy-ly like him. Locals are perhaps most familiar with Yuriy Bekker, a fixture in the local classical music scene. The Belarus native has served as the concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra since 2007, and he was recently named artistic advisor as well. He's also critically acclaimed for his violin skills. Chernyavsky is currently a member of the San Francisco Symphony, but Piccolo audiences may recognize him for his work with the St. Petersburg String Quartet. Von Maltzan plays cello for the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, and Ertz is a principal violist for the Winston-Salem Symphony.
Stringing along. Expect the foursome to perform famous string quartets from Russian composers Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.
