David Lee Nelson is a stand-up comedian. David Lee Nelson is going through a divorce. David Lee Nelson is getting sober. David Lee Nelson performs this solo show about major life changes in the age of social networking. Part of the Stelle Di Domani Series at Piccolo Spoleto Festival.
Commiseration is cathartic
David Lee Nelson has had a rough year. He's given up drinking and smoking pot, and oh, by the way, his wife left him. If that's not a recipe for some serious comedy, we don't know what is. Nelson (who locals will know from his work with Skinny White Comics and his 2009 Piccolo one-man show, Silence of Lucky) uses audio visuals and his well-honed comedic timing to tell a provocative tale in his second solo performance Status Update. Not to give the goods away, but Nelson has managed to produce a show that really is art imitating life.
Nelson is a local boy gone big. The CofC alum graduated in 2000 and has been living and supporting himself as a real New York City stand-up comic since 2003. See kids, dreams can come true. College students and adults alike will relate even more to the production's theme: Facebook status updates. "I noticed I was updating my status on Facebook a lot last year, and that was the genesis for this," Nelson says.
We all can relate
"This show is for anyone who's been in a relationship that hasn't worked out and wants to laugh at that or maybe feels they drink a little too much," Nelson says. That, or if you're like him and often find yourself at your computer with three or four browser windows open that are all on Facebook. Status Update is about life in the social networking age, and for Nelson that means ... it's complicated.
