Following the sun sounds like a tale straight out of Greek mythology — and one that didn’t end well for Icarus. While we can’t chase Helios in his sun chariot, we’ve got the next best thing. OnShore Racing is hosting the second race of their Follow the Sun series — the Summer Solstice 5K. Runners can orbit the trail in Hampton Park, and race to the end of the galaxy — err, we mean finish line — for a good cause, with 80 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “We urge people to run with us because it’s the most fun you can have running and supporting a good cause at the same time. We like to make sure our races focus on the fun as well as being a competitive event,” says Virginia Wininger, race director. But the fun doesn’t end after the race. Runners and volunteers can cool down with a post-race party. Party-goers can enjoy food from vendors such as South Carolina Watermelon, Earthfare, and more. Adult beverages and a light breakfast will also be provided.
Price: $20/late registration, $15/adv.
